All over the world craftsmen and women are struggling to maintain their skills and make a living. Here in Nepal, the situation is the same: too much pressure to cut corners, produce inferior goods at cheap prices to compete with China. KALINTA set up a workshop with the intention of producing high quality goods that are not only exceptional for their beauty but also useful in modern living. Some items are specifically designed for dharma or religious activities, but others are made to enhance the beauty of your home. Initially, the basic shape is made by machine, then the carving, painting and gilding is all done by hand. |

THE KALINTA WORKFORCE As well as master carvers and painters, several unskilled and semi-skilled workers are vital members of the team, helping in the preparation and finishing of the products. Most of the workforce is made up of Tamangs from the hill regions of Nepal, Tibetans from the mountain regions and Newars from the Kathmandu Valley. To enhance each piece, we try to use other materials made in Nepal, such as the hand-made Lokta paper for the backs and boxes of the frames, and locally crafted iron or brass fittings for the boxes and altars. A great deal of care and attention goes into the making of the products, so that each piece is a little work of art. We are happy to work on custom made products for your company. |

ABOUT NEPAL NEPAL is currently going through a difficult period of political instability. Many long-term foreign residents have already packed up and left. It is difficult to know how best to help the people of Nepal in such uncertain times. Starting a business in Nepal requires not only a financial commitment, but a strong resolve in terms of time and determination. Having lived here since 1996 with our children, we are convinced that small and medium size businesses can be of great benefit to Nepal, not only offering much needed employment, but also bringing ideas and technology from abroad to help design suitable products for foreign markets. |
